Traffic Light List Changes

Following the UK Government announcement about changes to the red, amber and green arrivals lists and the rules that must be followed to enter the UK, it may be that you need to change your plans for your Arrivals testing.

Green List to Amber List

If you arrive in England from a country which has moved from the Green List (or Green watchlist) to the Amber List, you will now have to quarantine at the place you are staying for 10 days after arrival. Testing and quarantine requirements/exemptions depend on countries visited, age and vaccination status.

You will need the Amber List Arrivals Test Package (Day 2 and Day 8 PCR tests) and undertake 10 days of home quarantine, unless you are exempt. You do have an option to take a PCR – Test to Release test (TTR) on Day 5 if you wish to release from quarantine earlier. (The Day 5 TTR test is not compulsory, may differ in Wales and is not currently available in Scotland).

Exemptions are as follows:

  • fully vaccinated* in the UK or under the UK vaccine programme overseas (e.g. residents of the British Overseas Territories, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) or;
  • participating or have participated in a formally approved clinical trial of a coronavirus vaccine in the UK or;
  • ordinarily resident in the UK and under the age of 18 at the time of arrival (i.e. children).

If you are arriving in England from an Amber listed country and have been *fully vaccinated in the USA or Europe you will not have to quarantine or take a Day 8 Test upon arrival. The rules do not apply to arrivals from France.

The European countries that this rule applies to are:

  • EU countries
  • Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland and the Vatican City

You must be *fully vaccinated with a vaccine authorised by the:

  • National Health Service (NHS)
  • European Medicines Agency (EMA) for Europe
  • SwissMedic for Switzerland
  • Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the USA

If the above items apply to you, then you will no longer need to self-isolate when you return to England from an Amber listed country (except France), but you need to take a Day 2 Amber Arrivals Test.

UK resident children under the age of 18 will no longer have to self-isolate when returning to England from an Amber listed country, but if aged 5 or above, they do need to take a Day 2 Amber Arrivals Test.

*Fully vaccinated means a full 14 days have passed since the final dose was given.
