Tips to Staying Safe and Well this Winter

Tips to Staying Safe and Well this Winter

With lockdown 2.0 underway and the colder months approaching, you may have questions around how you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe this winter. Take a look at our guidance and advice to ensure you and your family can understand and manage risks to stay safe and healthy over the coming months and beyond.

Follow guidelines

Following government regulations which may differ between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland is vital to stop the spread of COVID-19, but here’s a quick reminder of the basic steps to keep safe and well.

Wash your hands thoroughly for around 20 seconds with soap and hot water regularly, or use a sanitiser gel when out and about. Wear a face covering in enclosed spaces such as in shops or on public transport and make space of at least 2 metres between yourself and others outside of your household.

Enjoy time outdoors

It might be dropping cooler, but wrapping up warm and spending time exercising and enjoying fresh air is a safe way to embrace the outdoors this winter. Depending on national and local restrictions, it’s also a good way to keep in touch with friends and relatives - staying 2 metres apart with anyone not in your household still allows for a great walk and catch up, but don’t forget to follow government advice by minimising time spent outside of your home in lockdown periods.

Know your risks

Evaluating your own risk this winter can help you to put the required measures into place to keep yourself and your family safe. Understanding the levels of COVID-19 in your community, how many people you come into close contact with and whether you are classed as vulnerable will help you to assess the risk of certain activities you may undertake, such as travelling and meeting with others.

Stay connected

Maintaining relationships during a period where meeting with other households may not be possible is important to stay well. If guidelines allow, meet up with family and friends in person, but otherwise, be sure to stay connected by phone, video calls or over social media. Staying in touch with others and sharing your feelings can help you to manage concern during an uncertain time.

Limit your news intake

Many of us are spending more time than usual at home as a result of local and national lockdown restrictions. With most social and leisure activities no longer available, we are spending more time in front of the television and therefore being exposed to extensive news coverage regarding the COVID-19 pandemic that can sometimes be all-consuming.

Whilst it’s important to educate yourself and your family about the pandemic, finding a balance between informing yourself of the latest guidelines and recognising when enough is enough can help you to focus your mind elsewhere and create new daily routines that prioritise your mental wellbeing as well as physical health.

Recognise symptoms

Being able to recognise COVID-19 symptoms within yourself and members of your household is important. Common symptoms include a high temperature, a new, continuous cough and a loss or change to your sense of taste and smell. If you spot any of these symptoms, follow government advice immediately.

Test yourself at home

If you have COVID-19 symptoms and aren’t able to travel safely to get to a testing station, taking a Cignpost Rapid home testing kit is a quick and easy way to get a test that you can administer yourself from the comfort of your own home.

If you don’t have symptoms but need peace of mind to visit relatives after lockdown (should guidelines in your area allow), taking a home test can put your mind at ease so that you can get on with what matters so much to so many after periods of isolation - catching up with friends and family safely.
