All About Home Tests

Home Tests are available for Arrivals Tests, for customers arriving in to Mainland England only.

They can only be booked for Green List Day 2 Arrivals Tests and the Amber List Day 2 and combined Day 2 & Day 8 Arrivals Package (as an alternative to visiting one of our test centres). They are not suitable for any other tests at the moment. If and when this changes, you can find out on our website. They are not needed to be taken by children aged 4 and under, in line with all Arrivals tests.

Home Test kits are sent to your home address that you give us at the time of booking. You will self-swab at home and have your sample collected by a courier from the same address, and taken to our laboratory for testing.

Results for Home Tests are emailed within 24 hours of the laboratory receiving the sample.

If you would like to take the above Arrivals Tests for England at home rather than visiting our test centres, then this could be the best solution for you. However, there are some restrictions around test date availability, so make sure you've read all the information here, and in our FAQs, and that you're clear how the Home Testing works, before you book.

Booking your Home Test

When selecting a Home Test for your arrival into England, please make sure that you read all our information before booking, to ensure it suits your needs. Then book a test in the normal way on our website by selecting an Arrivals test, but then select "Book A Home Test".

Available test days are Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays). The tests dates we offer in the booking process reflect this.

You must book before you travel to England, and a minimum of 4 days before your desired test date if purchasing before 6pm; otherwise there must be 5 days between purchase and desired test date.

Day 2 Arrivals tests can be taken on or before Day 2, but for Home Tests you can only choose Day 1 or Day 2 for your Day 2 Arrivals test. We don't offer Day 0 (Arrivals Day) as an option for Home Tests, as you may not be arriving home till later in the day, and as collection could be from 07:00, you might miss it. In this instance we would recommend booking a test at one of our Testing Centres if you want to take your Day 2 on Day 0 (Arrival Day).

Once you have told us your arrival day in England, the booking system will only allow you to book Day 2 and Day 8 tests at appropriate times.

Please note these tests are only available within England as per UK Government guidelines.

Receiving your Home Test

Your Home Test kit will be delivered using Yodel Xpect 24

Your target delivery date for you to receive your Home Test kit is two days prior to your test date. The kit should fit through most letterboxes, however there is an option to leave special delivery instructions if you are concerned it might not fit.

Once your Home Test kit has been dispatched to the address you gave us when you booked, you will receive a dispatch email with the tracking ID details. Once you receive this email, cancellations are not allowed.




Activating your Home Test and collecting your sample

On test day, it is important that you activate your Home Test kit following the instructions in the kit/emails, and that you complete the 'Return card' to ensure that we can process your sample. During this activation process, you will be asked to collect your sample. 

You must activate your Home Test kit prior to the Yodel collection. Once your Home Test kit has been successfully activated, you will receive a confirmation email.

Instructions on how to use the swab to collect your sample are in the kit along with all necessary returns packaging.


Returning your Home Test sample to our laboratory

Yodel will contact you (between 06:30 & 13:00) on your test day to advise you of your 2-hour collection window. This slot is fixed and you must make sure you are going to be at the address you gave us.

You will receive the timing notification by email (and text if you don't read the email) from Yodel. The collection window is from 07:00-21:00.

Please ensure you’re available for the time of collection and that you have completed your test before the courier arrives. It is NOT possible to request a time slot, or to change it.

You can track the journey of your Home Test sample using the tracking ID Yodel provided you with.



Home Test Results

We will notify you by email once we've received your Home Test sample in our laboratory.

We will begin processing your sample immediately, and you can expect to receive your Home Test results by email within 24 hours of us receiving your sample at our laboratory.

Other information about Home Tests

Home Tests are suitable for Mainland England arrivals only, although our Arrivals tests at our testing centres are also suitable for Wales. For the other home nations, please see their relevant websites to find suitable arrivals tests.

Please note you are responsible for ensuring the Home Test sample is taken correctly using the instructions provided.

It is your responsibility to be at the address to supplied for the courier to collect your sample on your test day. Your failure to be available for the courier to collect from your given address may result in you having to book a new test at your expense.

Any cancellation must be made at least 4 full days before your test date. Home Tests cannot be cancelled after the Home Test kit has been dispatched to you. Please read our Terms and Conditions.
